Atkin’s Diet
Atkin, in his Atkin’s Diet, ascribed to prevailing theories about weight gain were all wide of the mark. He poo-pooed the notion that saturated fats were bad. Rather it was carbohydrates that led to the weight problems Americans have. Atkin held that our obsession with fat really worsened the difficulty. He noted all the low-fat foods that are high in carbohydrates. That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were less ideal than they would have eaten.
The Atkin’s diet shifts the focus. By cutting out carbohydrates people burn stored body fats. Lose the fat lose the weight. It’s not just a matter of eating less. Dr. Atkin held that your diet could actually help you burn calories. The Atkin’s diet supposedly burned an extra 950 calories everyday. But the claims were not true.
Dr. Atkin also touted the positive influence this Atkin’s diet could have on those with type 2 diabetes. So in general any diet that helps reduce weight will help take in hand type 2 diabetes. But the Atkin’s diet is also low in carbohydrates, which should be avoided with type 2 diabetes apart from caloric intake, so by means of this part of the diet Atkin’s claimed persons who suffer type 2 diabetes would not need medication like insulin. The medical world, in general, disagrees with Atkin on this. They allow that lower carbohydrates help with type 2 diabetes, but there is no evidence that carbohydrates cause the disease.
The Atkin’s diet has four phases – induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. Here is an overview of the most important phase – Induction.
The Induction phase is the most challenging phase of the Atkin’s diet. Atkin’s is flexible as to the time period – but recommends two weeks. For the duration of this phase carbohydrates are ruthlessly limited – only up to 20 grams per day. The goal is to enter a fat burning metabolic phase called ketosis when the body, starved of glucose, will begin converting stored fat into fatty acids needed to power the body. Weight loss during this phase could be extreme – some Atkin’s followers reported losses of 5-10 pounds a week.
Learning the best carbohydrate levels for weight loss and for day to day intake after the weight loss ends is the purpose of the final three phases in the Atkin’s diet. Millions of people are still losing weight on this diet – but be careful of the dangers of taking in too much fat with this winning but controversial diet plan.
