Buying The Right Baby Crib
When you are planning to add a new member to your family, you will need to make sure that you have everything that you need for your baby's nursery. The most important furnishing that you will buy for the baby's room is the crib. This is the place that your child will spend a great deal of time and it is also the focal point of the room. When you are creating a nursery for your new baby, make sure that you follow a few guidelines.
The crib that you will buy new will follow the safety guidelines that you should follow when you are choosing baby furniture. Over the years there have been a number of changes that have been made to the design of the crib to make it a safer place for your baby to sleep and spend time. If you are choosing an older crib, there are some things you should look out for. This is especially true if you are choosing one of those stunning antique cribs for your new baby.
There are some very specific guidelines that must be included in your crib for the safety of your baby. The mattress should be tight fitting without any possibility of your baby getting underneath the mattress. Look for missing hardware or broken slats on any used crib that you are considering. The gaps between the slats should not be more than 2 3/8 inches so that the baby cannot become stuck between the crib slats. The posts on the crib should not be any higher than 1/16 to prevent the baby from becoming caught on the crib. And designed cutouts in the headboard should be excluded to prevent your baby's head from becoming caught.
An older antique crib can be a stunning look for your nursery, but only if the crib meets the safety regulations regarding the sale of baby cribs. Make sure that the treasure that you find in a yard sale is able to measure up to these regulations or you might be risking the safety of your baby.
Also, when you put your baby in the crib, don't use pillows, comforters or quilts in the crib to prevent the potential for suffocation. Keeping your baby safe while they are in their crib should be your primary goal. No matter how beautiful a crib is for your nursery, it is not worth the risk to your child's safety if it presents any of the safety concerns outlined here.
