World Taekwondo Federation Tae kwon do is a full contact sport where you are allowed to kick to the head (throwing punches to the head are not allowed), it is not very dangerous to practice Tae kwon do in the proper circumstances with a qualified instructor. In a Taekwondo bout, full protection is used to protect the competitors heads. To reduce any chance of a head injury, a competitor allowed to engage in a competition for three months if one was knockedunconciousst by a blow to the head. If the same incident happens again after these three months, they would not beallowed to compete for six months. Another knockoutto the head after this six month period results in a final exclusion of competitions.
ITF Tae kwon do is only semi-contact. It is not allowed to attack the head with full force. All the same, it is allowed to throw punches to the head, by using the so-called "killing-blow", stopping just an inch before the target. To reduce injuries, ITF use gloves at sparring-competition.

Taekwondo is known for its sensational aerial kicks. The participant should learn the basics of taekwondo through choreographed sequences of combative moves , the breaking of boards or other materials, and free sparring. They will also receive instruction in principles such as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, and self-control.
